‘Arrogant’ MTV Names Post-Millennial Generation

In the meantime, MTV will have to just hang out for the word to catch on, and to find out what kids these days actually want from their parent’s youth culture station. MTV did some research, asking 13- to-14-year-old consumers to decide on a name for themselves. So far, people who probably aren’t part of this particular age group have referred to it as Gen Z, iGen, Posts, Homeland Generation, ReGen, and Plurals.

“Some of the names that were being thrown about for this generation felt like they hadn’t been vetted by the generation”, Gould said.

According to Time, the age group is distinct from millennials because they’ve only known a black president, their video games are much more technically advanced and they can’t remember a time before Instagram and Snapchat. “They have this self-awareness that systems have been broken”, MTV president Sean Atkins told TIME. “I think that’s given us a different perspective”. They’re more likely to stand out than fit in.

According to Time, the network has been studying the new generation’s elders – teenagers, that is – and surveyed more than 1,000 kids about what they should be called. It’s no surprise that they can’t relate to many millennials’ nostalgic comments about teenage years.

As of now, MTV executives said they may change the name in the future, but for now they’re sticking with the Founders. They’re digital natives who don’t know a time before being constantly plugged in. The survey garnered 544 names, including the Navigators, the Regenerators, the Builders, the Bridge Generation and the Founders.

The Daily News points out that Baby Boomers is the only generational nickname recognized by the USA census, and most were suggestions by writers, not decrees by corporations.
