Tiger Woods May Not Play Golf Next Year
Once the most celebrated icon of the golf world, the 39-year old confesses he has no idea if he will ever return to the game. Woods wants to be there as a player, but it says enough that Love III, 51, is in better condition than Woods as a professional having won on the US Tour at the Wyndham Championship in August.
“I would like to be able to get to that first”, he said. And two, even if I don’t come back and I don’t play again, I still want to have a quality of life with my kids.
Woods had two back surgeries in a span of 18 months followed by what he described only as another “procedure” in the same area in October.
“That’s the hardest part for me”.
The golfing icon will reach the landmark birthday at the end of this month, but it is now safe to assume it won’t signal the start of bigger and better things to come.
In past press conferences when Tiger withdrew or discussed his injuries, Woods led us on with a sense of hope, a sense that everything would be O.K. He would use his world class work ethic to get back on the course. The former world number one did not have much to say about when he would play again, which somehow spoke volumes to those listening.
According to ESPN.com, Woods said: “There’s nothing I can look forward to, nothing I can build towards”.
‘Where is the light at the end of the tunnel?
“I think pretty much everything beyond this has been – will be gravy. Hopefully the day-by-day adds up to something positive here soon”.
More details were expected later in the week, but Finchem said it would apply more to the younger players.
Woods said the nature of the ailment frustrates him.
In the wake of Bryant’s recent announcement, Woods reflected, “You add up all those games, it takes a toll on the body”.
This might be quite an understatement and his close friend and rival Rory McIlroy insists golf without Woods doesn’t bare thinking about.
Here is hoping that Woods can simply get back to where he needs to be to function every day, and enjoy his family.
Woods won the last of his 14 major titles in 2008 and is now ranked 400th in the world, but insists he can compete at the highest level once more despite turning 40 on December 30.
“I’ve passed Jack on the all-time win list”, Woods said. However, Woods was reluctant to compare himself to Nicklaus.
“If that’s all that entails, then it’s been a pretty good run”.
“It’s different from the other surgeries I’ve had in the past”. It would only be fitting to see Tiger retire at exactly 14 majors if for no other reason than to make Earl even more correct than he already was. In my 20 years, I’ve accomplished a lot.
Woods has signed up as an assistant captain for the 2016 Ryder Cup, but it now looks as though he will be a non-playing member of the U.S. team.
