Suspects identified, 1 was citizen and employee
They later say a third person has been detained but how this person might be connected to the shootings is not clear.
Hours later, the couple were killed in a gunbattle on the street with police, just 2 miles from where the mass shooting had occurred.
The second suspect was later identified by San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan as 27-year-old Tashfeen Malik.
“Based upon how they were equipped, there had to be some degree of planning that went into this”, he said. They were later killed in a shootout with police. Up to three people entered and opened fire, Burguan says. “We have not ruled out terrorism”. “It is also possible that this was workplace-related”, said Obama, who ordered flags flown at half-staff after the tragedy.
A law enforcement official told The Associated Press that Syed Farook, 28, was one of the suspects in the shooting.
Khan told CBS News that Farook and Malik were married for two years and had a 6-month-old child, who they left with Farook’s mother. However, Hussam Ayloush, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Los Angeles, told The Washington Post that Malik was born in Pakistan and spent time in Saudi Arabia before marrying Farook.
The Los Angeles Times reported that Farook had been at a party at the center before storming off angrily after an altercation.
Federal authorities say that the two assault rifles and two handguns used in the San Bernardino massacre were all purchased legally in the United States – two of them by someone who’s now under investigation.
He said: “It is a possibility, but we don’t know that yet”. It’s believed the two were in a relationship. They were disposed of by the bomb squad.
Arrowhead Regional Medical Center and Loma Linda University Medical Center said Thursday, on their respective Twitter sites, that each had five patients. The hospital was put on a code-yellow alert in response to the threat but it was later determined “the threat was indeed not credible and that our campus was safe”, hospital spokeswoman Briana Pastorino said Wednesday.
Farook and Malik were killed in a shootout with police that involved 21 officers, Burguan said. When he came back word got around Farook had been married, and the woman he described as a pharmacist joined him shortly afterward.
SWAT officers stake out in the surrounding streets to search for the suspects.
