Cadiz objects to Madrid fielding ineligible player in Copa
Isco scored twice after the break before Cristian Marquez’s late consolation rounded off the scoring in a 3-1 Madrid win.
But the Russian should have been serving a one match ban after receiving three bookings in the domestic cup competition last season while on loan at Villarreal.
“The club were not notified about the sanction. It hurts me but Real Madrid have to shed some light on what happened”.
Real Madrid edged closer to the Spanish Cup exit door Thursday after third-division Cadiz appealed their midweek defeat because the capital giants had inadvertently fielded a suspended player. The CAS [Court for Arbitration of Sport] has dictated that a player receive a personal notification.
“This situation required a speedy decision because there was no time to speculate”, he said. It makes no sense to say the player was notified when he says he wasn’t.
Real director Emilio Butragueno said in quotes published in Marca: “We knew nothing of the situation”.
“We have no precedent for something like what happened yesterday”. If someone did not do their job, we would ask for forgiveness. “We weren’t told by the federation or Villarreal”.
We received nothing, no note, nothing [from the RFEF]. The federation knows this. That’s our conclusion after speaking with the legal services.
However, the result could yet prove meaningless if Madrid are proved to have fallen foul of the competition’s rules with Cadiz president Manolo Vizcaino confirming his club will launch a formal complaint.
What do you think about Perez’s response?
“Clearly we didn’t know”. “It’s not our fault”. Having since left Villarreal and returned to Madrid, the suspension should have been active on Wednesday.
The incident will provoke an uncomfortable reminder of a similar mishap for Benitez, whose Valencia side were expelled from the Copa del Rey in October 2001 for selecting four non-EU players in their matchday squad for a 1-0 win over Novelda.
Three minutes into the game Denis Cheryshev scored the team’s opening goal, despite the fact that he was not even supposed to be on the pitch.
The two sides met in the first leg of their last-32 tie at the Ramon de Carranza on Wednesday evening, but news circulated midway through the first half that Denis Cheryshev should not be on the pitch due to a suspension.
