Terrorism is ‘possible’ in San Bernardino shootings, Obama says
He said that in addition to the guns that the shooters were carrying, they “appeared to have access to additional weaponry at their homes”.
On Wednesday, 14 people were killed in a shooting rampage at the Inland Regional Center, marking the deadliest shooting in the USA since more than two dozen, mostly children, were killed in Newtown, Connecticut, about three years ago.
“The weird thing is, we have these shootings occur in places that already have these laws, but he’s pointing to these and Hillary Clinton’s pointing to these places as justifying passing this law even though it didn’t stop them in these cases”, he said.
Obama said he told the mayor of San Bernardino that “the entire country is thinking about that community”, and said his deepest condolences are with victims and their families.
“We don’t know at this point the extent of their plans, we do not know their motivations.”
“It’s also possible that this was workplace related”. “What I can assure the American people is that we’re going to the to the bottom of this, and we’re going to be vigilant as we always are in getting the facts”. Attorney General Loretta Lynch will provide an update on the investigation later today. That’s been done in cooperation and consultation with local law enforcement.
“It’s also possible that this was workplace-related”, he said, stressing that investigators have to “understand the nature of the workplace relationship between the individual and his superiors”.
Before Thanksgiving, Obama assured Americans “we know of no specific and credible intelligence indicating a plot on the homeland”.
“We know that other countries, in response to one mass shooting, have been able to craft laws that nearly eliminate mass shootings”, Obama said after Umpqua, citing gun control measures taken in Britain and Australia – “friends of ours, allies of ours… countries like ours” – as an example.
The president added that there may be “mixed motives” for the shootings, and that it may take some time to figure out exactly what happened. But we can’t just leave it to our professionals to – to deal with the problem of these kinds of disgusting killings.
US President Barack Obama on Thursday called on all Americans to do their part to prevent gun violence and on lawmakers to make it harder for criminals to get guns. He continued: “Because right now it’s just too easy”.
