A guide to developments surrounding Chicago police shooting, calls for federal
After the firing of Chicago Police Chief Garry McCarthy, more shocking details emerge concerning the tragic shooting of Laquan McDonald. “That gun was not in his hand unless the police glued it to his hand”.
Jason Van Dyke, the police officer charged with first-degree murder in McDonald’s death, posted 10 percent of his $1.5 million bond earlier this week.
At one point, Earnest pointed out that Obama had watched the video of the shooting and had a “human reaction”. Critics of the mayor and the local prosecutor have complained that it took too long for the McDonald tape to be released and for charges to be filed.
The White House on Wednesday refused to say whether Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel (D) should resign over his administration’s oft-criticized response to a police shooting involving a black teenager.
“Like every Chicagoan, I want to get to a place where we’re permanently addressing the entrenched issues in our police department”, Emanuel’s Thursday statement concluded. At least seven other officers were standing there when Van Dyke opened fire; if they lied about it, they should be prosecuted, too.
The pastors said they feel betrayed by Mayor Rahm Emanuel, after the he sought their support for re-election while at the same time he was fighting efforts to release the McDonald video. The settlement included a provision preventing the release of the video until state and federal investigations of the shooting were complete. “If anybody else is responsible for what happened, we’re going to hold them accountable for what happened”, Emanuel said.
The city responded to the complaint, however, denying outright the most damning accusations and countering that, in some instances, it doesn’t believe the plaintiff “has fully or accurately set forth the circumstances relating to the shooting of Ronald Johnson III and, therefore, denies, upon information and belief, the allegations set forth”. He shoots 17-year-old Laquan McDonald, whom authorities say is armed with a knife, 16 times, killing him. He fired on Johnson five times as the young man was running away, striking him in the back of the knee and in the back of the shoulder, according to Oppenheimer.
“I think the way in which she’s run the office is disgraceful”, Preckwinkle said of Alvarez to reporters Monday. And police have shot more than 50 people per year over the past seven years – a figure significantly higher than the number of police shootings in Los Angeles, New York and Houston.
Although he had interest in the job then, Ramsey told Philly.com the timing isn’t right, adding that hise wife and son – a Philadelphia police officer – are here in Philly. He also said the cameras inside and outside the establishment were fully functional, while Chicago PD claims they never erased any footage.
Emanuel also attended the Google grand opening.
“She knows Mayor Emanuel loves Chicago, and is sure he wants to do all he can to restore trust in the Chicago Police Department”, he said. But Alvarez in recent days has defended her actions as those of a careful, experienced prosecutor, and has said she will stay in office as long as voters will have her.
