Richt will not coach UGA in bowl game, sources say
Also, Georgia announced that Richt will not coach the Bulldogs in their upcoming bowl game.
Assistant head coach and wide receivers coach Bryan McClendon will serve as the interim head coach.
Before Richt could say anything, Georgia players held their hands together to make the sign of “The U”, as in the University of Miami, the team they knew from press reports Richt was about to take over. Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart is expected to be named UGA’s new coach, according to Chip Towers of the AJC and DawgNation.
The school said offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt and other staff members will retain their roles through the bowl.
Richt, 55, who went 145-51 in 15 seasons at UGA, was sacked on November 29. “Are you kidding me? Then on top of that, I can’t imagine that the Georgia fan base, the Georgia supporters are really that interested hoist a 16th national title on the strength of their future head coach”.
Richt comes to Miami with the fifth-highest winning percentage among active FBS coaches with a minimum of 130 victories. At the news conference, Richt indicated he would coach the Bulldogs for the team’s yet-to-be-decided bowl game, saying he was “really looking forward to coaching these boys one more time”.
The decision is a complete reversal from Richt’s statements during a news conference Monday. Richt, the former Miami quarterback, has reached a tentative agreement to be the Hurricanes’ next head coach, pending the completion of contract talks, a person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press. “If it wasn’t offered to me I would have asked for it. I’m very excited about that”.
As for Georgia’s postseason, it remains to be seen whether Richt sticks around and coaches the Bulldogs.
