What’s next after New Jersey lawmakers fail to override veto
For much of the year, Christie has been reluctant to take on Trump: They had a social relationship prior to becoming rivals for the GOP nomination. “This bill deals with mental illness”.
The bill had passed the Legislature unanimously and the state Senate voted to override Christie last month. The pardons included out-of-state residents who reported carrying a firearm to police during traffic stops not realizing they were in violation of New Jersey law.
After more than an hour of debate, during which several lawmakers invoked Wednesday’s mass shooting in California that killed 14, Democrats in the 80-member chamber appeared to be three votes short of securing the 54 needed to override Christie’s veto. “The strongest candidate for gun rights could be helped, but it could hurt them in the general election….” The prime Democratic sponsor disagreed.
“This bill has nothing to do with that situation”, said Assemblyman Christopher Brown, R-Burlington.
Would-be gun buyers who were formerly committed to a mental institution but have since recovered may be ineligible to legally buy a firearm because of the mental health records, but a judge can direct the record to be expunged from NICS if he or she finds that the applicant isn’t likely to act in a unsafe manner. Nothing has changed to ease that worry.
The bill was originally requested by state court officials concerned about public safety.
The New Jersey legislation would have required extra law-enforcement review of gun-license applicants who try to expunge mental hospitalization records. In other words, the measure is created to prevent mentally ill people from getting guns.
“There is a loophole as big as a Mack truck in the bill”, Rumana said. Speaker Vincent Prieto, in a statement, vowed to “put this bill back up again and again”.
“We need to do these things”, Christie said of his call for more aggressive law enforcement and a hawkish foreign policy.
The New Jersey governor also took on Trump for mocking New York Times reporter Serge Kovaleski after he refused to back up Trump’s claims of September 11 merrymaking. “I just want you to remember the week after 9/11, when airlines weren’t flying, when sports weren’t being played by professionals or by our children, when the stock markets were closed, and when we all jerked our necks up to the sky every time a plane started to go overhead when those airplanes started flying again”. “Let’s make involuntary commitment of people who speak violently easier for doctors”, the governor said.
Republicans arguing against the Governor’s conditional veto to uncover a major flaw in the original measure. The next override attempt is scheduled for December 17.
After the Star-Ledger criticized the endorsement, Bosse said on MSNBC Tuesday night that the New Jersey newspaper was acting like a “crazy ex-girlfriend”.
