Corbin says Price a ideal fit for passionate Red Sox fan base
There’s a new ace in town, as the Boston Red Sox have brought in David Price to anchor the starting rotation. The Red Sox have a gluttony of young talent, and they managed to keep the majority of them while making some team-changing moves at the same time this offseason. “Any team that’s not satisfied with their outcome past year is looking to improve, and the clearest way to improve the roster is by adding a quality starter”.
It’s only the first week of December, but already, Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski believes he accomplished what he needed to this off-season. Then, the following year he went to the Toronto Blue Jays and aided Toronto in getting to the playoffs, giving them their first shot at the championship since 1993.
Since Tom Werner, Larry Lucchino and John Henry picked up the Red Sox in 2001, they’ve used the organization as a cornerstone of a diversified worldwide sports conglomerate that spreads its wealth and attention – if, at times, unevenly – among soccer club Liverpool of the English Premier League, NASCAR’s Roush Fenway Racing and a management company that includes LeBron James, Johnny Manziel, a number of Major League Baseball properties and Boston College. The St. Louis Cardinals were very interested in signing Price, but clearly, the Red Sox were not going to lose this free agent bid. But even if that happened, the Sox would eventually have to pay that pitcher.
Fellow newcomer Chris Young is excited by the big moves made by Boston so far this winter. He signed with the Washington Nationals for $210 million last winter. Crasnick also says Zobrist is taking a “hands on” approach to negotiations. That being said, there were many teams who considered their own eligible players to be not worthy of tendering a contract, and as always there are a few surprises.
But, did the Red Sox give up too much?
However, locking up young players is not an easy task. The naysayers will point to the five-year, $100 million deal given to 29-year-old slugger Pablo Sandoval (who immediately posted the lowest batting average of his career, along with his lowest home run and RBI totals), and four-year, $80 million deal given to slugger Hanley Ramirez (who provided some power at the plate, but was absolutely lost in left field). Other teams aren’t as fortunate. “It’s definitely ideal, but some players are not willing to do it”, Nitkowski said.
