‘El Chapo’ escapes from prison cell

Mexican authorities released the security footage that shows notorious drug trafficker Joaquin Guzman, aka “El Chapo“, escaping from prison through a tunnel, en route to his first celebratory beer.

Guzman successfully dodged two surveillance cameras – one mounted outside his cell’s entrance, the other a closed-circuit lens inside. But the surveillance had two blind spots for privacy – the toilet and the shower.

Even with the security measures, he found a way to escape unnoticed. One more step and Guzman stood on the dusty floor of the barn, where the digging crew had left 4-inch by 4-inch wooden beams, 8-foot- tall coils of steel mesh, gallons of hydraulic fluid, 10-foot lengths of PVC pipe and an electric disc saw.

The interior ministry said 101 checkpoints have been placed on the main roads and highways of 21 of the country s 31 states and the capital since Guzman fled prison on Saturday.

Guzman’s likeliest hiding place is believed to be to the Golden Triangle area in Central Mexico. He paid guards to help him sneak out of the prison through a laundry cart.

Mexican authorities are offering a $3.8 million reward for information leading to his capture once again.

Mexican police released a recent photograph of him with his hair and black moustache shaved off.

Three prison officials have already been fired, including the director of the prison. Since the shocking escape, 49 people have been questioned.

Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman broke free from his cell using the tunnel Saturday evening and no official spotting has been confirmed since.

Through the Sinaloa Drug Cartel, the 60-year old kingpin smuggled drugs that are worth billions of dollars into the USA, making him wanted in six different courts in the United States.

In 1993, Guzman was arrested just south of Mexico’s border with Guatemala.

The tunnel stretched for about a mile and ended inside a half-built house. Now to that massive manhunt for one of the world’s most dangerous drug lords. He goes back toward the shower, returns to the bed, and back to the bathroom, bending down a first time behind the wall.
