Van Gaal talks about injuries, including Martial
Watford striker Troy Deeney scored a 90th-minute own goal, soon after converting an equalizing penalty, to gift Manchester United a 2-1 win in the English Premier League on Saturday.
Shaw, who endured an injury-hit campaign last season, was ruled out for six months after suffering a double leg-break following a forceful tackle from PSV Eindhoven defender Hector Moreno in the Champions League.
The United manager only has one specialist right-back in his squad – Matteo Darmian, who signed from Torino in the summer.
After weeks of criticism Memphis will finally earn some praise after an impressive performance, which earned him the official man of the match award.
It remains to be seen how Van Gaal will resolve all these.
Rooney hopes to have recovered from the bug that kept him out of the win at Watford while Mata and Martial have the best chance of recovering in time to figure in the Group B game.
“But he played a very good match like Jesse Lingard”.
Manager Louis van Gaal was forced to make four changes from the side that played the last time, with Michael Carrick joining Rooney and Martial on the missing list and Marcos Rojo dropped to the bench after his long trip back from Argentina for worldwide duties. “We want the three points”, the Watford player explained. We’re feeling optimistic, as always, and our goal is to win both games and to have the best possible start to the busy period ahead.
Van Gaal also raved about Shaw’s mental strength and he said he doesn’t have any doubts he will come back even stronger when he’s fully fit. I did not play [Marcos] Rojo also because when you have jet-lag you can not play. I know some people think our positional game is boring but I think it is a way to disorganise the opponent’s organisation.
Deeney became the first player to score a goal and an own goal in the same Premier League match since Damien Delaney in May 2014 (Crystal Palace v Liverpool).
On his role at Watford, Memphis added: “The system was different, but we have a little bit more freedom and there was space in behind also which we took advantage of”. We tried to play and didn’t give up. “We were very good in other games – so good that it was boring”.
