The International Organization for Migration said nearly 900,000 people fleeing conflict and poverty in the Middle East, Africa and Asia have entered Europe this year seeking sanctuary or jobs.
Almost 140,000 refugees and migrants crossed the sea to reach Europe in November, a almost one-third drop from the some 220,000 migrant arrivals in October, the United Nations refugee agency said on Tuesday. The migrants were put into buses and taken to a small, overcrowded detention center for foreigners awaiting deportation, the private Dogan news agency said.
In an interview with several newspapers, Mr Tusk said Europe had to stop a huge influx of migrants, majority not refugees from war, and should not underestimate the security threat it represented.
Only Syrians, Iraqis and Afghans are allowed through despite hundreds of children being among those trapped, including nationals of Lebanon, Pakistan, Iran and Bangladesh.
Campaign group Amnesty International said in a statement the move is “illegal as it is unconscionable”.
