93rd Annual National Christmas Tree lighting to be held Thursday in Washington
The Christmas tradition in Midtown dates to 1931, and this year’s tree traveled 83 miles from upstate Gardiner, N.Y., to take the familiar spot overlooking the Rockefeller Center skating rink.
The Season of Wonder and Light in Arcata kicks off Friday, Dec. 4 from 5 to 9 p.m. on the Plaza with stories, songs, blessings and the lighting of the trees (free).
VP of Communications at NBC News Erika Masonhall tweeted to explain that local NBC stations had the option to drop the “Nightly News” broadcast and instead feature the tree lighting. For those that have chose to visit, it is possible, and you can receive the latest emergency alerts and updates from @TheNationalTree lighting, or text NCTL2015 888777.
The night included performances by David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash as well as Fall Out Boy, Tori Kelly, the Joyous String Ensemble, and the United States Coast Guard Band. The White House recognized Trees for Troops in 2012 as a top 20 national finalist in the Joining Forces Community Challenge.
“Trees for Troops” is part of the national effort by the “Christmas Spirit Foundation” and Fed- Ex that was started in 2005 to give Christmas trees to military families as a way of showing gratitude for their service.
WASHINGTON (AP) – President Barack Obama jumpstarted the holiday season Thursday, lighting the National Christmas Tree but also appealing to Americans to “come together as brothers and sisters” one day after 14 people were shot to death in Southern California.
“Now, this is, of course, the most wonderful time of the year”.
