Senate OKs Republican bill unraveling Obama health care law
Now Republicans know that if they win the presidency and hold both houses of Congress, they can strip 89 percent of federal funding for Planned Parenthood.
The Senate bill is now at the House of Representatives, where it is expected to pass with a Republican majority.
“Democrats are focused on doing something to stop the gun violence, and we will force amendment votes to that end today”, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, Nevada Democrat, said.
Republicans blame the Affordable Care Act for surging health care costs and insurers abandoning some markets.
“It’s time to take a stand for the rights of all human life, including the unborn, and start doing more to protect the well-being of women, mothers, and their families”, said Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash. “And it’s not what our families and communities want”. CBS This Morning, for example, reported on how “Senate Republicans rejected new gun control legislation”. The budgetary tool known as reconciliation prevented the possibility of a filibuster and only required 51 votes.
A almost party-line vote from the Democratic Party Dec. 3 failed to restore funding by a vote of 54-46. Sen. And one of those defections could be Susan Collins of Maine. Bernie Sanders was absent for the vote.
The bill passed by the Senate would end financial penalties for individuals and companies that don’t follow the law’s requirement that they buy insurance for themselves and their workers. The bill also gets rid of government subsidies for those who buy policies on newly created insurance marketplaces and halts the healthcare legislation’s expansion of Medicaid coverage. It would also annul tax increases imposed to cover the law’s costs, including levies on the income of higher-earning people, medical devices, costly insurance policies and tanning salons. Federal dollars can not be used for abortions except for rare exceptions.
The group has been under intense scrutiny after secretly recorded videos of officials discussing the sale of foetal tissue to scientists emerged earlier this year. The group has said the videos were deceptively doctored and that it’s done nothing illegal.
That’ll be symbolic – they won’t have the votes to override an inevitable veto – but it’s been a long road to get even this far. The Federation described the Planned Parenthood funding was necessary especially after the events that took place last week.
Lawmakers have voted dozens of times to repeal all or parts of the health care overhaul. Opponents of Planned Parenthood said there are many alternatives that provide women with access to health care.
President Barack Obama, however, has already said he will veto the Senate bill.
“It’s either repeal or nothing”, Sen. Republicans say such a scenario would highlight GOP priorities for voters. “This bill is a substantial improvement over the original House bill, and I’m grateful to Senate conservatives and Senate leadership for joining me in making it so”. “We’ve run cycle after after cycle on repealing Obamacare”.
