Mark Richt, new hire at Miami, won’t coach Georgia in bowl game
The university announced Thursday that it will introduce its new football coach at a press conference on Friday.
A UM spokesperson would not confirm the hire, citing an ongoing coaching search. Richt, 55, was a Hurricanes quarterback from 1978-82 and is a graduate of Boca Raton High.
Richt, who led Georgia to a 145-51 record in 15 seasons, will be the man to lead UM into the next era of Hurricanes football. Look at Texas where Charlie Strong is two years into the rebuild in Austin and has 10 wins to show for it and next year may not result in a bowl game. “You couldn’t ask for anything more out of a head coach”.
Well, was just told with 100-percent certainty that Mark Richt to Miami should be finalized tonight or tomorrow.
Then he accepted Miami’s offer on Wedneday to be its head football coach.
“We are blessed to have the opportunity to come to a world-class institution and world-renowned city and play a role in the life of the campus and community”, Richt said. He said Monday he was contacted by “about five” schools about their head-coaching vacancies, and reportedly interviewed at Virginia on Wednesday.
Beyond that, I’m hesitant to say Miami will be a consistent national title contender like they were in their glory days. I miss calling plays. “And really, I don’t want to make a lot of promises, other than I want to promise that we’re going to get to work and we’re going to earn the right for victory”.
Richt also inherits talented returning playmakers on offense including running backs Joe Yearby, Gus Edwards and Mark Walton, whom Richt recruited at Georgia. The news was first reported by WSB’s Zach Klein.
Richt went 19-3 against Atlantic Coast Conference opponents when he was at Georgia, and Miami can only hope that trend continues.
UGA J. Reid Parker Athletics Director Greg McGarity has named assistant head coach Bryan McClendon, who also coaches wide receivers, as the interim head coach.
In October, the University of Miami fired coach Al Golden after a 58-0 home loss to the now-No. Quarterman posted a message of support on Twitter soon after news of Richt’s decision broke Wednesday evening. “He has been working recruiting hard”, Scott said of his brother. “I think splitting between would have been hard for me to do”.
The teary-eyed Richt smiled and made the sign back at them.
When former Florida State coach Bobby Bowden heard Georgia had fired Mark Richt, he did not believe his protégé was getting out of coaching for good.
So no bowl game for Durkin.
