Israel to build tougher fence near West Bank flashpoint city; 2 Palestinians
A Palestinian man was shot dead on Friday after allegedly running over two Israeli soldiers in a vehicle attack east of Jerusalem, locals and Israel’s army said.
The first death occured when troops raided the village of Qattana overnight to search for ammunition and arrest suspected assailants.
According to the report, after Kerry failed to make progress on the Palestinian front, Netanyahu convened the cabinet to discuss recently acquired information that the Palestinians were planning new processes against Israel in the diplomatic arena.
Hours earlier, a Palestinian man was shot and killed during clashes with Israeli forces in the West Bank on Thursday, the Palestinian health ministry said. In the attack, no Israelis had been injured.
Security forces arrived to the area where clashes broke out with Palestinian protesters throwing rocks and Molotov cocktails, creating difficulties for emergency workers treating the wounded.
It’s the latest attack in a two-month wave of violence.
The Palestinian, identified as 19-year-old Omar al-Za’aqiq, was shot by Israeli forces on the scene and died of his wounds.
Israel has already adopted the controversial policy of demolishing the homes of attackers, which it says acts as a deterrent.
Yaalon told lawmakers that construction of the fence will take a year.
The military proposed releasing Palestinian security prisoners who have been jailed in Israel for decades, increasing the number of Palestinians allowed to work inside Israel and giving additional weapons to Palestinian security forces.
The terrorist who stabbed four people in the town Kiryat Gat on Saturday is believed to have slipped through gaps in the frontier between Israel and the West Bank. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said he opposes confidence-building gestures to the Palestinians until the violence subsides. Palestinians also accuse Israel of using excessive force in suppressing violence.
Palestinian leaders have accused Israel of excessive force and blamed the violence on Israel’s 48-year-old occupation. Children as young as 11 have stabbed Israelis in the current unrest.
