Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi became highest wicket-taker in T20 cricket
He returns to captain England for the first time in worldwide cricket and has won the toss and chosen to bat on the same surface used for both the ODI at the venue and Thursday’s T20I.
Shehzad and Fafatullah open for Pakistan.
With four required for victory from the final ball – and three for a super over – Anwar Ali heaved at a length ball outside off stump and failed to make contact.
Afridi dispatched for 33 runs in his four overs in the opening game of the series struck with his first ball today sending back Alex Hales for 11. Roy was looking confident as he departs attempting a slog and bottom edging it to the wicket keeper.
“Hopefully that does rub off on the younger players because it can get quite heated, especially when the ball is flying everywhere in T20 cricket”.
Vince was dropped by Sohail Tanvir (1-43) at long on and the ball deflected over the ropes for a six. The two punished Liam Plunkett then, collecting a four and a six.
During the match, the star player Afridi co-incidentally broke the record of his team mate and long term bowling partner Saeed Ajmal after dismissing England s James Vince.
Sam Billings and Jos Buttler kept the scoreboard ticking over.
Buttler (33) was the next to go, trying to reverse scoop a Tanvir delivery that he edged behind to Sarfraz.
Afridi was also the pick of the Pakistan bowlers, taking 3-15. He again used the slowed one with some flight to lure the batsman down the track, beat him, and Buttler stumped him.OUT!
England are 11 for no loss in two overs.
The result came in the ninth over when Mohmand ventured down the track but missed the ball while Buttler whipped off the bails in a flash.
Pakistan rebalanced with Mohammad Hafeez, he scored 25 off 20 before he tried to play Plunkett into the leg side, but all he could do was produce a leading edge to Willey at mid on.
And Pakistan were favourites as they raced to 50 inside five overs of their reply, but they were pegged back by Adil Rashid’s superb spell of 2-18.
Plunkett finished his spell with the wicket of Malik (26) in his last over. Shahid Afridi may have ended on the losing side, but at least he had provided his legion of supporters something to cheer on a weekend of otherwise lean pickings.
However, the Pakistan T20I captain fell in the same over, caught at third man off Woakes (2-40).
Roy reaches 28 from 19 balls including two sixes and a boundary.
Joe Root also chipped in with 20 and Chris Woakes hit a quickfire 15 off seven balls at the death to help England to a competitive 172/8 from their 20 overs.
After a Jos Buttler single, he unfurled the shot of the match against the second ball of the 13th, a stunning maximum between the fielders at deep cover.
