Gun control puts congress at odds
Two databases that track mass shootings – shootingtracker and gunviolencearchive.org – depend on news accounts and are not official. The guns used in the San Bernardino massacre were legal in California, but even if they had been illegal there, the shooters could crossed the border into a state with more lenient laws.
“The mass shootings, week after week, different types of people all being killed, is arousing the American conscience, and we will win these fights”, he said.
“I am for gun rights, but I am also for having good background checks so that terrorists can’t get it”, Kathy Boarman said. Republicans who point to mental health services as the solution had begun to blame extremist views.
First, guns, the central issue: We need a new public health approach based not on eliminating guns (that simply won’t happen in a land awash with 300 million guns) but on reducing the carnage they cause. “And his policies would leave us defenseless”. It’s what we do with swimming pools (fences, childproof gates, pool covers). “It can not be this easy for somebody who wants to inflict harm on other people to get his or her hands on a gun”.
It’s what we should do with real guns. This means that students and faculty, including Public Safety at Chapman, are not permitted to carry guns on campus.
It is time for the leaders of our country and Montana to take a stand against gun violence and enact gun safety laws. But we have had more mass shootings this year – defined as an incident in which at least four people are shot – than we have had calendar days.
“Currently, individuals can purchase firearms over the Internet and at a gun show without going through a background check”. The loophole allows certain gun sales – including at gun shows and through private dealers – to proceed without a background check.
“And again, it’s not just the same people coming in and buying the guns”, he said.
Every piece of new information – the arsenal, the black tactical gear, reports that Malik pledged allegiance to the Islamic State on Facebook during the attack – suggests that this is not a case of angry-man gun violence or workplace-related violence, but a planned terrorist attack.
The details of the California massacre at a holiday party pointing at a possible link to Islamic militants and raising questions about domestic extremism quickly knocked both Republicans and Democrats off their talking points, upending what has become a grim and predictable ritual in American politics. Some are calling to make gun laws as strict as they are in Australia and France, which would make purchasing automatic weapons illegal. A large percentage of the gun transactions not covered by background checks are family and friend transactions – which would have been exempt from the universal background checks pushed by Democrats. The NRA used to be a reasonable organization.
One out of six took place during parties, often while celebrating a birthday or graduation. San Francisco supervisors and Sunnyvale voters chose to require that in 2013, though no magazines have been turned in by owners in either of those cities.
While the Democrats claim Cornyn’s proposal was a sham, enabling gun purchases to continue as usual, the Republicans feared the Manchin-Toomey Gun Control Bill would deny people the right to own firearms due to the Republican party’s suspicion that the current terror-watch list includes people that do not belong on there, thus denying them their right to own a gun. Chuck Grassley, who said the bill “won’t prevent the next shooting or reduce crime or fix our mental-health system”, according to the National Journal. And this week, 14 people slaughtered in San Bernardino, Calif…. But we’re not even trying. So as Republicans enthusiastically maneuver to pass a long-elusive Obamacare repeal, they’re also forced to go on record against broadening gun regulations. So in our next election, let’s have one of our issues be: “It’s the guns, stupid” and vote on that issue. “This level of violence must be stopped”.
