Javadekar urges developed world not to introduce new agenda
India today cautioned the developed nations against introduction of any new agenda at this “late hour” if they want to make the crucial climate change conference in Paris scheduled for later this year a “success”.
Countries throughout the world have dedicated themselves to creating a brand new worldwide local weather settlement with the conclusion of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of the Parties (COP21) in Paris in December. Javadekar feels it’s not the right time to rewrite the convention, and the event in Paris should celebrate the universal but differentiated agreement based on what actions each country can take. We shouldn’t attempt to rewrite the Convention.
She said the EPA aims to remain engage with stakeholders and interest groups in ensuring that the outcome of the country’s INDC process is successful and represents its national interest and shared responsibility to deal with climate change and its attending impacts.
India has also demanded the developed nations to pay up their contributions to the global Green Fund and facilitate technology transfer assistance for developing countries.
“We should not forget that what will lapse is the Kyoto Protocol and not the UNFCCC”. He made this speech at the Major Economies Forum on Energy and Climate Change at Luxembourg, in reaction to suggestions from a handful of nations that the annexes should not be part of the agreement. He further added, that we should not rewrite the Convention, however, Annexes are part of the Convention’s basic structure.
Speaking at the end of the forum, the Executive Director of EPA, Madam Anyaa Vohiri, urged them to take ownership of the country’s INDC process and drive its preparation within the context of the country’s national development aspirations and unique situation as a country. Such collective action will address the challenge of climate change.
Earlier, there was no restriction on any country to take climate-friendly action; however, this event has changed things in an incredible manner. In Warsaw, it was decided that countries will formulate their INDCs or actions as per their capacity, available resources and support.
