San Bernardino Shootings Have Not Altered Shumlin’s Stance On Guns

In the wake of several mass shootings across the country, Senate Democrats are trying to make another push for tighter gun control.

The FBI officially announced the shooting was a terrorism investigation on Friday. The loophole allows certain gun sales – including at gun shows and through private dealers – to proceed without a background check.

Some Republican senators did support what should be a bipartisan issue-Senators Mark Kirk (Illinois), Pat Toomey (Pennsylvania), Susan Collins (Maine), and John McCain (Arizona) all voted in favor of expanding background checks. “I got to tell you – if you’re too unsafe to fly in America, you are too risky to buy a gun in America”. House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisconsin, is among them and is backing a bill proposed by Rep. Tim Murphy, R-Pennsylvania. Adam Lanza and his mother needed less privacy about his mental health and the arsenal they kept in their home. The two rifles are not specifically listed among the models outlawed in California and would be legal if they had a minor design change to comply with a law banning ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 bullets.

If we were ever going to consider doing something about gun violence, you’d have to think that San Bernardino would be the starting point. Then, the president issued a series of executive actions and recommended congressional action which was never passed.

And if you’ve got a TV or access to the Internet or maybe even take a newspaper, you probably also saw this statistic: that if you count a mass shooting as one in which at least four people are injured, we have totaled more mass shootings this year than we have days.

“Any law about gun carrying didn’t have anything to do with the attack on Planned Parenthood”.

Knowing the amendments faced certain failure, Feinstein and her colleagues promised to continue pressing for new gun regulations.

Mental health reform, in a package yet to be determined, is expected to earn enough votes to pass in the House and Senate in 2016.

Meanwhile, Assemblyman Mike Gatto (D-Glendale) said Friday that he would introduce state legislation that would ban the sale of guns and some chemicals to people on a federal government’s anti-terrorist “no-fly” list of people restricted from commercial flights. In general, though, fewer Americans are dying as a result of gun violence – a shift that began about two decades ago. But with the highly politicized debate over gun control, and no fixed standard, there’s an ongoing battle over the definition.

This decline in gun violence is part of an overall decline in violent crime.

Hours before the shooting in San Bernardino, a petition signed by 2,000 physicians was presented to Democrat lawmakers in Washington, calling for the removal of the restriction.

Shortly after the killings, the president reiterated his call for increased gun control.

That’s a common argument in the West – in particular where gun control of any kind is often viewed as unpopular.

“All that Newsom’s initiative does, and all most gun control measures do, is make most people who don’t understand the reality of this situation feel safer because they feel “something” is being done – but the something is nothing other than to give people a false sense of security”, Michel said. Howard was willing to lose his job in order to make sure such a calamity never occurred again in the nation, which lacks a strong NRA-style gun lobby.
