Urban Meyer shoots down rumors about Browns coaching job
According to Tim May of the Columbus Dispatch, Meyer stated through a school spokesperson this morning that he has no interest in any coaching jobs other than the one he has now at Ohio State.
So what gives with the statement?
ChatSports.com ran a story Friday saying sources with ties to both the Browns and in the Big Ten reported the Browns were planning to fire coach Mike Pettine and bring Meyer aboard with the “largest coaching contract in National Football League history”. The author of the story, Mack Ferguson, makes it clear that he has no idea about whether Meyer would actually accept an offer.
Either way, Meyer wants to set the record straight: He’s not interested in that or any other job.
However, back in January, he did leave the door open to a future in the NFL, telling reporters after winning the College Football Playoff that he didn’t have any NFL interest “right now”. But the eye-test was not there in a game where Ohio State played its worst game of the year and maybe under Urban Meyer.
Saturday, Ohio State fans will be rooting for two teams that have ruined the Buckeyes’ title chances in the last few years, the Michigan State Spartans and the Florida Gators.
However, Meyer wouldn’t be the first coach to say he was going to do one thing, while turning around and doing another.
