Louis van Gaal firmly behind goal-shy Manchester United captain Rooney
An unnamed Manchester United star has informed Telegraph than Louis Van Gaal’s playing style is unfair on him as well as the fans.
Jamie Vardy has scored in a record-equalling 10 consecutive league games to take his total to 13 for the season and Van Gaal acknowledged United must be prepared to be tested.
In the first half Jesse Lingard played a very good game, but we didn’t play so well. He scored and won a penalty and now he is scoring 10 games in a row. “I only know, for example, Dennis Bergkamp as a player with me did the same with Ajax and that is not so easy”, he said.
United have lost two and drawn one of their last six road league fixtures and were beaten 5-3 in this fixture by Leicester last season.
Rooney’s form remains a major line of questioning at Van Gaal’s pre-match press conferences, and it was no different on the eve of the Leicester game.
Not a ringing endorsement – but there’s a chance!
The Red Devils travel to Leicester City tomorrow evening and will be looking to bounce back from Wednesday’s sluggish goalless draw with PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League.
The Foxes head into the Premier League game on the back of a 3-0 victory at Newcastle United, a result which saw them leapfrog Manchester City and Arsenal to the top of the league table. “That is why we are second in the league and in our Champions League group”. But Van Gaal remains unworried about the criticism, responding: “We are still not lucky in finishing the chances”. “I feel we showed a lack of composure which put ourselves under pressure a lot of times”. “And our away average is much higher than previous year”.
Van Gaal will be without Ander Herrera, Phil Jones, Luke Shaw and Antonio Valencia for Saturday’s game. “At this moment, he doesn’t play in the striker’s position, Martial is playing there”, he said.
“I think maybe he’s set up his team to be very good defensively because he thinks, maybe, he hasn’t got the quality up front”.
Ferdinand told The Sun that, while there were areas to improve on, the large strides made in 18 months under Van Gaal speak for themselves, adding that Sir Alex Ferguson didn’t always play the most exciting football either. “We’ve proved that more than ever this season”.
