Suicidal Man Killed in Police-Involved Shooting in Surrey
“We verified, verified, verified”.
IIO investigators had on Saturday cleared the scene of the shooting, however investigators remain in Dawson Creek.
The IIO began investigating the shooting early Friday and later that day a video emerged that begins just after police shot the man, who the B.C. Coroners Service has yet to identify publicly.
BC Hydro has yet to issue a statement on the shooting.
Kilpatrick says she doesn’t know how the initial misidentification happened, but notes that a knife was seized at the scene.
“Our officer has received medical treatment and is expected to be released from hospital later today”, said Supt. He died shortly after.
Spokeswoman Kellie Kilpatrick said in the 2013-14 fiscal year there were five officer-involved shootings, while in 2014-15 there were 11.
“The information we have is that a male was creating a disturbance, allegedly destroying property”, she said.
The program includes online information, email updates, twitter posts, a telephone line, email addresses for questions and two community consultation offices. To come speak to you now nearly 24 hours later, and provide a significant change in the information is not something we typically find ourselves dealing with.
At about 6:30 p.m. Thursday, police shot and killed the man outside the front door of the Fixx restaurant.
An officer appears to kick away an object from the man’s hand before he is handcuffed and first aid is administered.
An open house about construction of the controversial $8.8-billion Site C dam was taking place in banquet facilities of the restaurant that evening. This made the man seem like a potential danger, according to police.
However, police insisted that the man wearing the Guy Fawkes mask, was in fact carrying a knife.
A spokesman for Amnesty global, one of the groups opposed to Site C, said he had never heard of an Anonymous group protesting or attending meetings about the project. The officers involved have been sequestered, and it is not clear whether they will be charged, suspended or placed on administrative leave.
When asked whether investigators were also working with CSIS, Kilpatrick said: “No comment”.
“What an officer carries on his toolbelt varies depending on officer location, detachment and the type of work they are doing”.
The IIO has not commented on the authenticity of the Facebook video.
