Beatles drum kit sells for $2.1m
This is the second auction in a month that Julien’s, an auction house which focuses specifically on celebrity memorabilia, are holding in order to sell items once owned by the Beatles.
Colts owner Jim Irsay spent $2.2 million Friday to add one of Ringo Starr‘s drum sets to his growing collection of music memorabilia.
Ringo Starr has auctioned off the first ever copy of the The Beatles self-titled 1968 album, with the item selling for $910,000 (£600,000) at auction.
The kit was used by Starr on Beatles hits Can’t Buy Me Love and She Loves You.
Irsay is a long time rock collector. He owns roughly 30 famous guitars, including instruments used by Bob Dylan, Jerry Garcia and Eric Clapton.
It must be because it’s a very special vinyl as it’s the first ever to be pressed with # 0000001 printed right on it. It was revealed recently that The Beatles all got the first four pressings of the album and Starr just happened to snag the first ever.
Irsay owns prominent guitars from the group’s other three members – Paul McCartney, the late George Harrison and the late John Lennon.
The 1963 Ludwig Oyster Black Pearl drum kit was used at over 200 shows in the sixties after Starr took possession of it on 12 May, 1963. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the couple’s Lotus Children Foundation.
