ISIS Praises ‘Supporters’ In San Bernardino Attack
In its English-language radio broadcast, the Islamic State group hailed the perpetrators of Wednesday’s mass shooting in the USA state of California as “soldiers of its caliphate”.
Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik didn’t appear on the FBI’s “radar screen” before the shooting on Wednesday that killed 14 in San Bernardino, California, said Mr Comey.
The FBI is officially investigating the San Bernardino attack as an act of terrorism, citing “a number of pieces of evidence”. S. citizen Farook within 90 days of the visa issuance (reflecting a marriage in Saudi Arabia), passed the vetting process and received a green card from the U. S. State Department. U. S. State Department spokeswoman Elizabeth Trudeau said today the government stands by its vetting process and has no plans to make changes in it, .
But he demanded that President Barack Obama “acknowledge this act was committed by the same Islamic jihadist movement – including al Qaeda and its estranged sister organization ISIS – that we have battled for 15 years”.
Two law enforcement sources told CBS News that Farook had been in contact with an individual in the US with suspected ties to terrorism who was known to the FBI, Milton reports. USA authorities are investigating the shootings as an act of terrorism.
He said: “We know the killers in San Bernardino used military-style assault weapons, weapons of war, to kill as many people as they could”.
Comey also said the Federal Bureau of Investigation had “nothing in [its] holdings” about the two killers.
While details about the shooters emerged Friday morning, an unusual occurrence took place at the couple’s former residence.
JUDY WOODRUFF: It also turns out that Malik took to Facebook as the attacks began, and under an alias she pledged allegiance to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, leader of the Islamic State group. Nor did they have an idea the couple had a makeshift bomb lab in the apartment they shared with their 6-month-old daughter and Farook’s mother.
“When someone goes insane and commits an act that probably could be work related, it doesn’t make a statement about an entire religion”, he said.
The hard drive from their computer is gone, and two relatively new cell phones were found smashed in a garbage can, law enforcement officials said.
Malik had been living in Saudi Arabia before marrying Farook two years ago. 223 caliber ammunition and more than 200 9 mm rounds as they fled the carnage of a mental health services center in an SUV, San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said earlier this week.
Investigators are looking into a report that Farook had an argument with a co-worker who denounced the “inherent dangers of Islam” prior to the shooting, a USA government source said.
As investigators search for signs of a political or religious motivation for the massacre, the discovery of Malik’s Facebook posting has forced them to consider whether any radical impetus for it came from her more than from the husband, or from both.
Malik’s uncle Javed Rabbani said he has not met his brother in three decades.
Pakistani intelligence officials say Tashfeen Malik, one of the shooters in the California massacre, moved as a child with her family to Saudi Arabia 25 years ago.
Malik started studying pharmacy at Bahauddin Zakariya University in the Pakistani city of Multan in 2012, said the school’s vice chancellor, Tahir Amin.
