Cyber Monday sales top $3 billion as discounts spur buyers
Online sales make up 10 percent of overall retail sales, but that increases to 15 percent before Christmas as online shoppers snap up discount deals, according to research firm Forrester.
And the trend is clear.
The £1.1 billion in sales made on Black Friday alone represent a 36 per cent year on year increase, with Experian confirming that this was the first time that the billion pound mark had been breached in a single day of shopping.
Mobile spending, or sales via smartphones and tablets, jumped 53 percent to $838 million, making up 27 percent of total online spending. She accepted that some buyer may still be facing issues shopping online. And retailers are breathing a sigh of relief after a lackluster Black Friday.
Global leader in digital marketing and digital media solutions, Adobe Systems Incorporated (NASDAQ:ADBE), reported the online holiday shopping frenzy has marked an all-time high this year for USA companies at $2.98 billion in sales, up 12 percent compared to last year.
Dr. Bickle says only a couple of so-called “big box” chains attracted huge numbers of in-store customers on Black Friday.
Online shoppers spent more than $3 billion on Cyber Monday but, for every 100 product page views, there were 14 out-of-stock messages. In fact, advertisers spent 64% more this year to connect with consumers via mobile search than they did in 2014.
The news may initially appear bleak for traditional brick-and-mortar retailers, who will need to push further to integrate their on- and offline strategies as the line between the two forms of shopping continues to dissolve. Adobe also said that more people used their smartphones this year. Cross-border consumers are continuing to shop online from their favorite American retailers and brands this holiday season while taking advantage of special deals and seasonal promotions, according to data from Pitney Bowes.
Despite a few hiccups with site availability, Cyber Week 2015 on the whole was a huge success for the retail industry and bodes well for the remainder of the holiday season.
Still, retailers’ revenue on Monday and the weekend showed an increase compared with 2014, when online sales grew 8.5pc and 17pc. Retailers – traditional and electronic – are now offering bargains earlier than ever. However, while mobile shopping saw strong growth over the holiday with a 34 percent share of online sales, the role of tablets declined.
