Christmas tree farms stay busy, but their numbers are shrinking
They’re also starting a new holiday tradition together, renting their Christmas tree.
“The little naked tree I had previous year was so weak it could hardly hold any ornaments”, said Deb. “It was an underdog tree”.
Tree sellers are popping up in local markets and parking lots, and many folks are picking out the flawless Christmas tree.
Even though it has been too warm for snow in many parts of Ontario, that doesn’t mean it’s not a good time to get a fresh tree, she said.
Get your tree in water as soon as you return home.
When a Christmas tree is cut, more than half of its weight is water.

Many people are under the impression that Christmas trees can cause fires.

BCTGA estimates they will make up 80 per cent of those sold in the United Kingdom this year, compares with seven years ago, when around half were shipped from Europe. Water is important because it prevents the needles from drying out/dropping off and maintains the fragrance of the tree.
Position the tree out of the sun and away from heat sources. You can burn it in your fireplace the following season. Locally grown trees are fresher than those harvested for larger businesses, which are often cut in September.
“That guarantees freshness, and by going to a local tree farm you know it’s going to be sustainable, so trees will be replanted, and it will be a selective harvest”, says Derowitsch.
‘Our members are also reporting people buying a bigger tree to take pride of place in their lounge and a smaller one for their hallway or dining room.
“I like nature, I love it, it’s in my blood and the farm is a good expression of what I do”, Bastien said.
