Les Miles is safe, but staff changes still a possibility at LSU
Saturday was reportedly supposed to be Les Miles’ last game as head coach for the LSU Tigers. “We’re going to go forward and win championships here at LSU”. “You are our coach”, and Alleva followed with the same message. “Oh, OK, so then basically there’s not a serious overhaul because the motor seems to be pretty stinking strong”, Miles said, according to Ching.
After the game, the players lifted Miles on their shoulders and carried him down the field toward the student section as the crowd chanted “Keep Les Miles!”. In the third quarter, Fournette broke the school’s single-season rushing record that was previous held by Texas native Charles Alexander. Even though LSU is letting him back they should be ashamed for dragging one of the greatest coaches in SEC History through the mud over the last week.
Miles called the game “an imperfect fist fight”, and credited Fournette for making the difference.
“We’re a talented football team”.
Texas A&M (8-4, 4-4 SEC) was led by quarterback Kyle Allen, who was 15-of-28 passing for 161 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
Smith, rated as the No. 1 safety in the country by Rivals and the No. 2 cornerback in the nation by 247 Sports, tweeted out pictures and video of Les Miles visiting him on Monday night.
What happens when Saban comes to Baton Rouge next November and looks to record a 6th consecutive victory over Miles and the Tigers at Tiger Stadium, once again?
“During the week, a lot of people were saying this game would be won in the trenches”, said LSU defensive tackle Christian LaCouture, who helped carry Miles off the field.
A&M managed 82 yards in the first quarter on 13 plays and had but 142 yards at halftime.
Expectations have been high not just because of LSU’s enormous athletic resources, but because Miles has succeeded in recruiting players at numerous positions who’ve been good enough to make it in the NFL.
After being rolled for 1,306 yards, 99 points and 12 touchdowns in their previous three games – all double-digit losses – the Tigers rose up on an emotional night and played lights out in their regular-season finale against Texas A&M. The coach tipped his trademark baseball cap to acknowledge the crowd, raising the volume a little more. LSU’s administration had declined to comment on Miles’ status, fueling speculation that his days roaming Death Valley’s home sideline were about to end after 11 seasons. Most of his completions came on check downs to running backs, including a critical third-down swing pass to Leonard Fournette for a 17-yard gain that sustained the Tigers’ final scoring drive.
Hindered by a false start and a sack, the Tigers had to settle for a 46-yard field goal try, which Trent Domingue pushed wide right, the kicker’s third miss of the game.
