Colts owner Irsay completes Beatles collection, buys Ringo Starr’s drum set
This is the second auction in a month that Julien’s, an auction house which focuses specifically on celebrity memorabilia, are holding in order to sell items once owned by the Beatles.
Ringo Starr’s Beatles drum kit has sold for a staggering $2.1 million (£1.4 million) at auction.
A drum kit used by Ringo Starr in over 200 performances has been sold at auction for US$2.2 million.
Other items in Starr’s collection include a guitar used by John Lennon, which he gave to the drummer in 1968, some of his jewellery and his personal copy of The Beatles’ White Album numbered 0000001.
Jim Isray, the owner of National Football League team the Indianapolis Colts, bought the 1963 Ludwig Oyster Black Pearl three-piece drum kit at a sale in Beverly Hills.
Jim Irsay already owned guitars played by the late John Lennon and George Harrison and also one from Paul McCartney.
“Finally, after 45 years, the Beatles are together again”, the text read.
Irsay is a long time rock collector.
Part of the sale proceeds will go to the Lotus Foundation which funds and promotes charitable projects aimed at advancing social welfare.
According to Martin Nolan, Executive Director of Julien’s Auctions, the legendary kit has been out of the public eye for 50 years.
