Melee on Texas sideline after Baylor QB makes tackle
However, Texas defensive tackle Poona Ford forced and recovered a fumble by Baylor running back Johnny Jefferson late in the game.
A Nick Rose field goal to end the drive put Texas up 23-17, and Baylor saw its two chances to take the lead end in a fumble and an incompletion on a Hail Mary attempt to end the game.
Baylor outgained Texas 479-307 but turnovers plagued the Bears.
Anthony Wheeler’s recovery at the Baylor 18 led to Swoopes’ 9-yard keeper for a 17-0 lead.
But all they’re going to hear about is how they almost blew a 20-point lead with Baylor using a receiver – it’s not even fair to call him fourth string quarterback – who hasn’t taken a snap since his junior year in high school.
Baylor quarterback Lynx Hawthorne threw a first-quarter interception and made the subsequent tackle, but he threw the Texas defensive back down to the turf after the referees blew the play dead.
Only Vaccaro was punished once order was restored to the field. After that mayhem ensued. Baylor and Texas coaches did their best to separate the players and it did not appear that any punches were thrown, but multiple helmets were tossed. “That was our mission and goal coming out of the locker room”.
It wasn’t pretty – Texas let the Bears come back from down 20-0 – and to say the Longhorns don’t have a lot to improve on next season would be fallacious. Freshman Jarrett Stidham won his first start, but broke a bone in his ankle in his third one before Chris Johnson started the last two games – only to get hurt Saturday. Andrew Billings, Jamal Palmer, and Shawn Oakman set the tone in what might be the last game all three play at Baylor, and they were simply marvelous.
Saturday’s win marks the end for Texas’ seniors.
Looking for another “Miracle on the Brazos”, the Bears battled back from a seemingly insurmountable 20-0 hole at the half.
Some shoving ensued and many members of the Baylor team left the bench and crossed the field to come to the rescue of their fill-in quarterback. Needing a touchdown to win, the Bears marched 45 yards to the Texas 46-yard line before the Longhorns stopped Hawthorne and company as time expired.
Tyrone Swoopes found a wide open Caleb Bluiett off a play-action fake for the 57-yard score. He also ran for 52 yards with a touchdown.
For some inexplicable reason, Texas spent a great deal of time in an odd front with a deep safety against the run-heavy Baylor offense and, shocker, it didn’t work so well. Baylor Bears rank at 5 for 315.6 road rushing yards where as Texas Longhorns rank at 109 for allowing 234.3 rushing yards at home.
