Britain carries out second bombing in Syria
Labor’s shadow foreign secretary Hilary Benn drew applause with his speech contradicting his own party leader – and spoke in favor of military action.
“We know who in Turkey are filling their pockets and allowing terrorists to earn money by selling oil stolen from Syria”, Putin said in his state of the union address.
Four Royal Air Force Tornado jets bombed six targets in the Islamic State-controlled Omar oilfield close to Syria’s border with Iraq.
A Ministry of Defence spokesman said the planes had returned from the “first offensive operation over Syria and have conducted strikes”.
The UK carried out a first run of strikes in the early hours of Thursday only hours after MPs voted 397-223 in favour after a 10-hour debate in the House of Commons.
Mr Cameron said the move would be welcomed by Britain’s allies, including Muslim countries which had asked the United Kingdom to become involved, but stressed that degrading IS would take time.
Obama “expressed his appreciation that British air forces have joined with ours and those of other coalition members in striking ISIL in Syria as well as in Iraq”, the White House said in a statement.
Cameron also refused to apologise to opposition MPs for reportedly telling fellow Conservatives in a private meeting ahead of the vote they should not side with “a bunch of terrorist sympathisers”.
“It will be just a few more jets, (which have been) flying across Syria and hitting Isis for more than a year”, Mr al-Reis said. “I’m not convinced this person is actually genuinely going to turn up, but the police have been really supportive and have said they are going to be outside my surgery tomorrow morning”. They were using Paveway munitions in an area of oil fields where there was simply oil infrastructure in eastern Syria, a long way from Raqqa itself, down near Iraq.
“She will say: ‘Oh, we had an interesting moment today but it was all good'”.
Two RAF Tornado GR4s took off from RAF Akrotiri and flew an armed reconnaissance patrol over eastern Syria.
The monitoring groups could not confirm if the airstrikes were carried out by Britain.
Women pilots are set to play a key role in the Syrian bombing campaign which Defence Secretary Michael Fallon yesterday admitted “is not going to be quick” and last years.
Mr Fallon was speaking during a visit to RAF Akrotiri where he thanked military personnel for their commitment to tackling the terrorist threat in Syria and Iraq. My argument is this: “hitting Daesh does not hurt this process it helps this process”.
“We have got to find a political solution to the civil war in Syria”.
Friday’s operation, launched from the RAF base in Cyprus, included Typhoon fighters for the first time alongside Tornados. USA and British special forces are on the ground providing training, and more are on their way.
