Clemson punter foolishly calls own fake play, Dabo Swinney tears him apart
Before Saturday’s ACC Championship Game, Clemson offensive guard Eric Mac Lain said the first 12 games of the season were for fun; this contest was for hardware. The Tar Heels executed a flawless onside kick and recovered the ball but was flagged for offsides.
The Tar Heels made an effort to make the game interesting with a quick touchdown drive that saw Williams hit Davis for 40 yards and and Brandon Fritts for 27 to get inside the Clemson five.
North Carolina had to retry their onside kick. This is the most wins in Clemson football history and are now moving onto the College Football Playoff.
Head coach Larry Fedora explained in his post game press conference there was no way to know if the Tar Heels could’ve gone down the field and scored another touchdown, but he liked his chances considering how they had moved the ball on previous drives. “That was just Treasdall losing his mind, like he went insane on me”. “It’s just the way it is”.
“We’re not very happy with the way the play was ruled”, said receiver Ryan Switzer, who had two touchdown catches.
Green will be eligible to play in the Clemson’s national semifinal game after sitting out the second half. With a whopping 57 plays in the first half (and an ACC championship game-record 98 in the game), the Tigers didn’t have a ton of points on the board – leading 21-16 at the half – but they managed to take some wind from Carolina’s defense. With just under 10 minutes to play, the Tar Heels cut into the Tigers lead. Clemson then drove 97 yards – one yard longer than a touchdown drive in the first half – for a 28-16 lead. Earlier in the contest, he also caught a 16-yard touchdown from QB Deshaun Watson.
“I just can’t thank our fans enough, and I hope that all 60,000 of them come to Death Valley tomorrow for the biggest dang pizza party you’ve ever seen”, Swinney said. “Everybody was saying we’re still in it. That’s what I love”. Clemson scored on their next drive off a 35-yard touchdown pass to Artavis Scott from Deshaun Watson. Or the fact that Clemson had several bogus personal foul calls. “Since we’re not playing tomorrow, I’ll have a Sprite”, he joked after the game.
The Tar Heels had pulled to within eight points with 1:13 remaining on Ryan Switzer’s second scoring reception of the game. The Tar Heels entered the game 66-for-137 (48 percent) on third downs this season.
The sophomore led his team to touchdowns on each of its first two possessions of the second half-one after Williams’ interception and another after UNC failed on its own fake punt attempt.
After a tight first half, Clemson pounded the ball in the second half, running its way to a 45-37 win over UNC in the ACC Championship game in Charlotte. But when North Carolina had a chance to take lead in the third quarter, the decisive turnaround occurred. He did this on a 4th-and-15 play and only gained four yards. But cornerback Cordrea Tankersley intercepted Williams’ tipped pass at the 3-yard line. UNC recovered the kick. “That’s all I’m going to say about it. They were wrong”.
And while the Tar Heels started out strong on defense and created a key turnover in the third quarter – courtesy of a Nazair Jones deflection and interception – Heisman Trophy hopeful Deshaun Watson proved to be too much for them, as he won the game’s Most Valuable Player award.
