India claimed the bronze medal at the 2015 FIH Hockey World League Finals after beating the Netherlands 3-2 in the penalty shoot-outs after the score was tied 5-5 after regulation time in Raipur.
Trailing by two goals, the Dutch didn’t sit back and van der Weerden converted a penalty stroke to make it 4-5 in the 58th minute.
Mirco Pruijser (ninth minute), Nicolas van der Schoot (25th) made it 2-0 for the visitors but Ramandeep Singh (39th) and Rupinderpal Singh (47th) brought India on level terms. The Dutch took full advantage of it and they doubled the lead in Q2 through Niek Van Der Schoot.
Whenever the Indians got the ball in the opposition half in the first two quarters they looked clueless and in the process failed to deliver the final pass that would have resulted in a goal.
India’s counter-attack saw them produce a gem of a field goal with Sunil assisting Sardar, who lifted the ball onto the path of the goal before Akashdeep guided it home for the 5-3 lead.
World No.1-ranked Australia began the match with speed and intensity, just as they had in their quarter-final against Olympic champions Germany.
Both teams then went on a goal scoring spree and India manged to take a 5-3 lead with only 2:39 remaining.
Five minutes later, Netherlands earned three penalty corners in succession but the Indian defence did enough to hold on.
Manpreet was obstructed by the Dutch goalkeeper and the Indians were awarded a penalty stroke which Rupinder scored off and India won the Bronze medal in the Hockey World League finals. India 5-3 Netherlands.
India secured their second penalty corner in the 29th minute but Rupinder’s try was saved by the Blaak. Good defending from Netherlands.
