Kerry warns Israel about potential collapse of Palestinian authority
Earlier, Netanyahu responded Sunday morning to John Kerry’s warnings in the forum that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is trending toward a one-state reality on Sunday, saying that “Israel will not be a binational state”.
According to the Jpost Israeli news outlet, Netanyahu said “I want to make clear, Israel will not be a bi-national state”, under claims that the Palestinian Authority “does not want peace” and “calls for incitement” against the occupation. “Without the Palestinian Authority, Israel will be responsible for civil administration of the West Bank – it costs billions”. He says such an event would lead to situation that would threaten both the security of Israel and the Palestinian people. But, he also said Israeli leaders should not advocate or allow the Palestinian Authority to disintegrate. He questioned how Israel could possibly maintain its character as a Jewish Democratic state if this were to happen.
Kerry noted during a recent trip to Ramallah, Abbas had told him the level of Palestinian despair about the future was unprecedented.
He also described discussions with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, whom Kerry said “spoke more despairingly” than ever about the hopelessness Palestinians feel.
The last round of peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians, mediated by Kerry, ended in April 2014 without results.
The Saban Forum, put on by the Center for Middle East Policy at the Brookings Institute, is an annual gathering of Israeli and American government officials, policy-makers, journalists, business leaders, and other leaders to examine US-Israel relations and promote dialogue between the two nations.
Israel has been accused by human rights groups and the Palestinians for using excessive force in subduing Palestinian attackers in the past two months, after they no longer are considered a threat.
