Stabbing mistaken for performance art at museum
Art Basel Miami Beach is the extension of the annual contemporary art fair in Basel, Switzerland, and is attended by thousands.
Another day, another police shooting caught on camera and posted to social media.
Police in Miami Beach say they killed a razor-wielding man suspected in a bank robbery early Saturday.
Clerks at the bank’s Alton Road location triggered a silent alarm after a suspect passed a note to a teller that said he was armed with a bomb.
Witnesses said he could be seen causing a commotion inside the shop. The suspect was apprehended by police who were at the scene within seconds of the incident. Police said he refused to leave the shop. In the video, a man without a shirt is seen briefly confronting what appeared to be at least three police officers outside a shopping center. Shots ring out, and the man falls to the ground clutching his body.
The owner of the video could not immediately be reached by the Guardian. Miami Beach Convention Center had plenty of excitement with the stabbing being confused for art. Tell Examiner what you think about the incident below.
After the shooting, which occurred in front of the barber shop, witnesses gave conflicting accounts that officers also had fired a Taser on the man. Police could not immediately verify whether officers fired a Taser during the encounter. The man raised his hand with the razor during a confrontation with police and was shot twice by an officer with a rifle, Oates said.
Authorities packed the stretch of Alton Road between 15th and 16th streets, closing down all traffic for hours as multiple agencies investigated. After threatening to shoot a customer, the man left without money and didn’t leave an explosive device behind, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said.
“From what I saw, he just didn’t want to cooperate”, Johnson said. “The shooting part, it was really fast, I just heard the two gunshots and then I saw him go down and then I saw the cops doing CPR”.
“He came outside and was basically yelling gestures out to the police officers”, he said.
“He did have a knife in his hand and he was going towards the police”, she said.
