Mina inspires Valencia to 1-1 draw against Barcelona in La Liga
The game also saw former Manchester United and England defender Gary Neville taking over as the new head coach of Valencia.
Barcelona looked to have all but secured victory as the clock wound down, but Santi Mina grabbed a late equaliser four minutes from time to snatch a dramatic draw for his side.
Santiago “Santi” Mina Lorenzo’s 86th minute strike cancelled out Luis Suarez’s goal just before the hour mark to earn Neville’s inherited side a point against La Liga leaders, Barca.
“I did not stand on Abdennour’s foot on goal”, the Barcelona star told reporters after the match.
Neville watched on from the stands and will take charge of his first game against Lyon on Wednesday evening.
“It’s a point that feels good after what we have been through recently”, added the 19-year-old Spain youth worldwide.
“We weren’t rewarded for all the effort we put in, but Valencia defensively played very well”.
The Argentine scored the opener for Barcelona during their 1-1 draw with Valencia at the weekend, but his performance was overshadowed by allegations of stamping twice on Abdenour.
Prior to scoring, the home fans were furious with Suarez after he appeared to stamp on Abdennour during a scuffle between the two players.
“To get the three points playing very well in the first half means that these players, who we know are very important, once they get up to speed can cause a lot of damage to any defence”, said Madrid coach Rafael Benitez. “I trod on him without meaning to”.
“Still, we played well enough and now we must continue working hard to win games”.
