Lindsey Vonn sweeps World Cup downhills at Lake Louise
Vonn shaved seven hundredths of a second off her winning time from Friday as she stopped the clock at one minute and 50.43 seconds to triumph by a significant margin.
Vonn nearly turned herself into a wishbone a third of the way down the course in the season-opening women’s World Cup downhill. “I feel like there were some people that doubted whether I could win today and especially because Lara (Gut) had won the last couple races here in super-G”.
Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway, who swept the men’s downhill and super-G in Lake Louise last weekend, won Friday’s downhill in Beaver Creek, Colo. I don’t second guess what’s going on. As one of the oldest and most experienced racers in the field, she drew from her deep well of experience in Lake Louise going back to the first win of her career in 2003.
“A bit mediocre for me today”, the 27-year-old said.
Vonn, 31, is committed to racing three more seasons because she intends to compete in the 2018 Olympics in South Korea. Vonn entered the weekend with zero World Cup points. A year later, she fell on her left hip, but recovered to finish second. Sunday’s was her 70th World Cup win in all, making the all-time record of 86 World Cup wins – set by Sweden’s Ingemar Stenmark – look increasingly beatable. She will definitely be a gold medal favourite in the women’s alpine skiing downhill at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang. Lindsey Vonn won a super-G race Sunday to complete a sweep of World Cup races at Lake Louise for the third time in her career.
“Hat tricks are very hard to do”. She’s dominant in downhill with 14 wins, but has three super-G victories, too. Slalom phenom Mikaela Shiffrin made her World Cup debut in a speed discipline – speed races being downhill and super-G – and finished a highly respectable 15th. Jackie Wiles proved her recent head sponsorship from the Lindsey Vonn Foundation was no fluke by producing her best result since January 2014, finishing 17th.
