New England Patriots vs. Chip Kelly, Philadelphia Eagles
The network told news “According to Elias, the Eagles have allowed 45 points in back-to-back games for the first time in franchise history”. It was the special teams (blocked kick touchdown and punt return touchdown) and the Brady interceptions (a 99-yard return by Malcolm Jenkins that turned what looked like a 17-14 or 21-14 Patriots lead into a 21-14 deficit) that did in New England. The Patriots will look to bounce back from their first loss of the season which came against Denver last week.
After the Eagles went three-and-out, the Patriots struck back with a scoring drive. And given the overall struggles of the offensive line this season – I don’t care what Pro Football Focus says, they’re far from the best run blocking team in the league – not all the blame should be placed on Murray. While they had been far from flawless, the Patriots were clearly in control of the game. Instead, the now confident Eagles marched 80 yards in 12 plays for the touchdown – a 10-yard pass from Bradford to Jordan Mathews – that put it away at 35-14.
The Patriots are in the midst of an extremely rough day, now down by multiple scores to the not-exactly-spectacular Philadelphia Eagles on their home turf at Gillette Stadium. The year before, they were on the winning side of a 70-7 score against Weber State. On their next drive, they went 80 yards again – this time in eight plays – with Danny Amendola catching a lofting toss from Brady on a fade route to the corner of the end zone for a 14-0 lead.
In the third quarter, Philadelphia scored touchdowns on an interception and punt return.
What do the Patriots need to do to win? Johnson has 52 catches in 43 games for 601 yards one touchdown.
Another embarrassing loss should have folks talking about 2016, but somehow the Eagles are still just one game behind in the NFC East. We talk about that, plus more discussion on – what else? It was working up until Lane Johnson got called for a holding penalty and forced the Eagles into a 3rd-and-long that they couldn’t convert.
Las Vegas odds makers have New England listed as a 8 point favorite, with the over/under number set at 49. On the ground, Lagarrette Blount had 27 yards in nine attempts.
The result will be a relief for the Packers, who had lost four of their last five, and will be setback for the Lions, who had won three straight games coming into the game. The Patriots linebackers weren’t able to make a play until it was too late and Sproles wrecked the Patriots defense in the passing game.
The Eagles’ running game has been grounded for most of the season but if Chip Kelly’s offense can establish some sort of a rhythm today, it’s still unsafe.
