Jimmy Carter says latest brain scan shows no cancer
The former president’s doctors believe the melanoma – normally a skin cancer but sometimes forming inside the body – was the primary cancer, and that it had spread to the liver. “The church, everybody here, simply erupted in applause”.
Carter cut back a bit from his tireless schedule, including his work at the Carter Center, Emory University and Habitat for Humanity, among others, to focus on his treatment for cancer.
“Our prayers have been answered…I can’t think of a better Christmas present”. They quickly have become a cornerstone in the treatment of certain cancers, in addition to long-standing approaches such as surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.
The former Democratic president, known for his unassuming style, offered a quick smile as people who had come for the Sunday school class he teaches gasped and clapped.
Citing Carter’s grandson, Jason Carter, the Associated Press reports that doctors did not detect any cancer during his previous scan. “But the final result of how well the treatments are combatting or controlling the cancer, we don’t know yet”. A 1-inch mass in his liver was removed earlier that month, and a biopsy revealed the cancer was melanoma.
Doctors “found that there were four spots of melanoma on my brain…they are very small spots, about two millimeters”, Mr. Carter said. He said he would continue to receive regular treatments for the disease.
Carter first revealed the news to his Sunday School class in Georgia. Making Carter’s recovery even more astonishing is that only one-third of malignant melanoma patients respond to Keytruda treatment. The negative comments continued to pour in, “No cancer, and little to no brain…” was written by one member, with another saying, “No, the cancer that is Jimmy Carter is still with us”. “I have got thousands of friends and I have had an exciting and adventurous and gratifying existence”, Carter said.
