Vonn wins super-G to complete Lake Louise sweep
If she averages 10 wins this season and next in downhill and super-G, which she is very capable of doing if she remains healthy, she will break his record. Lindsey Vonn, of the United States, reacts in the finish area following her run at the women’s World Cup super-G ski race, in Lake Louise, Alberta, Sunday, Dec. 6, 2015. I think she’s going to go for it, but I think since it’s her first speed event on the World Cup circuit, she’s going to feel it out, see how it goes.
“Whenever you win, period, let alone by over a second, it definitely gives you that little bit extra boost of confidence”, said Vonn, who has 70 career World Cup victories. Her winning time on Sunday was one minute 19.79 seconds.Lindsey Vonn caught an edge with her left ski and was certain she was crashing.
Lindsey Vonn produced a masterclass in the FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup super-G at Lake Louise as she won her third race of the meet in Canada by over one second. Vonn also accomplished the feat at the Alberta resort in 2011 and ’12.
“It was a big deal”, Vonn said.
Happy doesn’t even begin to describe Vonn’s mental state this weekend after she completed the Lake Louise hat trick (victories Friday and Saturday in back-to-back downhills followed by Sunday’s super-G) for the third time in her career. “I think the good thing is I’m feeling more confident in being aggressive”, Yurkiw said. This year it’s just as incredible – I kind of feel old.
Larissa Yurkiw, of Owen Sound, Ont. was the top Canadian in 14th. She was hurt in a 2013 training run barely two weeks before Lake Louise, reinjuring her right knee, and settled for 40th and 11th in downhills and fifth in the Super-G.
Vonn was impressed by Shiffrin’s super-G debut.
But with her latest triumph, she edged just ahead of compatriot Mikaela Shiffrin 300-296 for the overall season points lead and took the Super-G lead as well.
“I still want to push as hard as I possibly can”.
It was Hirscher’s 15th giant slalom victory. “Even when she makes mistakes, it’s always in a part of the course that’s like, ‘Who cares?’ She knows how to carry her speed”. Shiffrin’s brother, Taylor, was a forerunner in the men’s giant slalom Sunday at Beaver Creek. “I think my consistency is getting better, so that’s a good platform to get those special results once in awhile”.
“Starting first wasn’t easy because I didn’t have the report from other skiers and how they skied it. It still went really well”. “In the back of my head I was thinking, ‘I’ll get points, but maybe a top 15.’ So, by holding in 15th, that’s a really good day”.
