Jets beat Giants in OT on Bullock field goal and Brown miss
Brandon Marshall of the New York Jets celebrates his touchdown to tie the game with teammate Quincy Enunwa as Craig Dahl of the New York Giants stands by on Sunday at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Jets then took a 23-20 lead on Ryan Bullock’s 31-yard field goal on the first overtime possession before Josh Brown missed a 48-yard attempt to seal the Giants’ fate.
The Jets won the toss and drove down inside the Giants’ 10-yard line.
“Difficult game to even bring your team up after the game”, coach Tom Coughlin said. The Giants’ inability to score the touchdown in the 2nd quarter directly impacted this play because had they scored the 7 points earlier, the lead would have been 24-10 instead of 20-10. With time, Jets receivers were able to get downfield and make plays in the fourth quarter and overtime.
Fitzpatrick has played 108 career games, a lot of them in Buffalo (when things were dire) and Cincinnati (when things were dire) and some in Tennessee and Houston (maybe not dire, but hardly delightful).
“I believe in trash talk and some guys get up for that, but some things are off limits”, Marshall said, via FoxSports.com.
“He was showing faith in us and that’s what you want”, defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins said.
The bottom line, though, is the Giants are fading at a time the Jets are making a push under rookie coach Todd Bowles.
Nearly nothing happened in the second half until the very end of the game, except the Jets and Giants both proved they weren’t very good football teams. When it came down to the final drive with the Giants leading by seven, the defense we’ve seen all year was as present as ever.
Nickel corner Buster Skrine and Darrin Walls could be in line again for work at the spot opposite Antonio Cromartie, just like after Williams got hurt.
Fitzpatrick on the game-tying TD pass to Marshall with 27 seconds left in regulation…
Fitzpatrick combined with Bilal Powell, who had eight catches for 91 yards, on a 25-yard TD pass for the Jets’ other touchdown.
But the Giants were unable to score a single point in the entire second half, or in overtime, and Fitzpatrick found it much easier to move the ball.
Taking care of the football will be a huge aspect of this game. Harris became the third Giant to have returned a kickoff and punt for touchdowns in the same season, joining Emlen Tunnell (1951) and Jimmy Patton (1955) … Brandon Marshall has come on strong for the Jets and he has 71 catches for 931 yards and nine touchdowns this season. It was the Giants’ third loss in a row, and fourth in their last five games. It’s something we can’t dwell on.
Eli Manning is the better quarterback in comparison to Ryan Fitzpatrick, though the great bearded one did throw four touchdowns last week in a big win over the Dolphins. Despite their 5-7 record, the Giants have had chances to win in each one of their losses (except for that Monday Night game against Philadelphia). They also allowed Kirk Cousins to go 20 for 29 with 302 yards and a touchdown. Jason Pierre-Paul had a fumble recovery to set up one of two field goals by Brown, whose miss was his first since December 21.
A little more than a minute later, Beckham had the Giants ahead again.
NOTES: Jets DE Mike Catapano was carted from the sideline with a right foot injury and didn’t return. Ereck Flowers hurt his ankle and was carted off. Still awaiting the diagnosis, but seeing the cart is never a good sign.
