Rangers performed well to restore peace in Karachi: Nisar
Sindh on late Wednesday extended the stay of the Rangers in the province for 30 days after thorough consultations and an assurance from Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali that the Rangers’ deployment was not about limiting the authority the provincial government, ARY News reported on Thursday.
Interior Minister Ch. Nisar Ali Khan says the issue of granting extension in the mandate of Pakistan Rangers in Karachi would be decided by midnight tonight.
The chief minister said the services of the Rangers for law and order in Sindh in general and Karachi in particular specifically against terrorism, targeted killing, extortion and kidnapping for ransom could not be forgotten.
Governor Sindh Dr Ishratul Ibad in a meeting with Rangers Director General Major General Bilal Akbar on Wednesday threw his weight behind the Rangers, while Chief Minister Sindh also had the same stance, contradicting the reports of differences between the Centre and Sindh on the issue. The governor called for “indiscriminate action of Rangers against terrorists and criminals to develop the confidence of people upon them”.

While the Sindh government has been granting extensions in the duration of Rangers’ policing powers every three months since 2010, this time, a standoff between the paramilitary force and the Sindh government had led the chief minister to mull over other options. He said the efforts of Rangers could not be forgotten. However, the notification issued under CM’s discretionary powers has to be passed by the Sindh Assembly, as the CM has himself announced publicly that he did not have the powers to issue any notification while ignoring the elected provincial assembly.
