Pistorius to apply for bail in South African court on Tuesday
Convicted murderer Oscar Pistorius will be back in the in the Pretoria High Court on Tuesday for a quick appearance ahead of formal sentencing proceedings.
Pistorius, 29, is now under house arrest in Pretoria after serving one year of his five-year prison sentence for culpable homicide – the equivalent of manslaughter.
Mfaku said the prosecution has not advised the NPA yet as to whether there were any new circumstances that would impact on his bail application. “His (earlier) conviction has been overturned so his sentence from before has been scrapped, now he has to apply for bail”, Lusanda Ntuli, spokeswoman for the justice ministry, told AFP.
Oscar Pistorius, six-time Paralympic gold medalist and the first amputee sprinter to compete at the 2012 Olympics, was charged guilty of killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
He also explaind that the date of sentencing will depend on the diary of the presiding officer.
The athlete killed Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day in 2013 after firing four shots through a locked toilet door.
The appeal court ruling changed his conviction to murder and sent the case for re-sentencing, saying the original trial judge had made “fundamental” errors in her ruling.
The NPA has said it wanted the process to be concluded as soon as possible.
Pistorius maintained that he believed that there was an intruder in his house and the identity of the intruder was “irrelevant to his guilt”.
