Vonn Wins Again in Canada
The third World Cup win of the weekend for Lindsey Vonn didn’t matter quite as much to the speed queen as rounding off her career victory tally to a solid 70.
“That kind of helped because it pissed me off”, she said.
Grenier, 19, raced just the second World Cup downhill of her career and her first at Lake Louise.
Another race at Lake Louise and yet another win for Lindsey Vonn.
“It was a big deal”.
Fellow American Mikaela Shiffrin, fresh from record-breaking slalom victories in Aspen last week, made her World Cup super-G debut on Sunday.
Those include 2011 and 2012, when Vonn completed a hat-trick of wins across the weekend and that feat is still on the table this time around.
Vonn had earlier won Friday’s downhill by half a second. The Swiss skier had been ranked in the top seven in both super G and downhill in 2010 and in super G from 2008-2010 and 2012-2013. “My skis were really fast”. “I have no words to describe it”.
Austria’s Cornelia Huetter took third after finishing second Friday. “I’m sure once she gets the hang of it, she’s going to be risky”. “I saw at the start that the light was getting bad, but I heard that some girls before me had good results”.
“A bit mediocre for me today”, the 27-year-old said.
She was first with a time of one minute 52.48 seconds.
Vonn, 31, is committed to racing three more seasons because she intends to compete in the 2018 Olympics in South Korea. She went over a jump and had to pump her arms to keep her balance. Shiffrin finished a respectable 15th. People say it’s because she’s taller and stronger than everyone else. But down the pitch, onto the flats, I felt like I carried some good speed. “I did a lot of things well, but I did a pretty crucial section in too conservative a way I think”. I think Heinz (Hämmerle) is doing an unbelievable job.
The runner-up of Friday’s downhill in Lake Louise, Cornelia Hütter of Austria, had a great run also in Saturday’s downhill.
“I have to come with everything I have every day”.
“It’s just astounding to me how good of an understanding she has of the terrain, above everybody else and knowing exactly when to let her skis go”, Shiffrin said. “I’m probably still a little harsh on my landings, so I’ll work on that, but otherwise the course was awesome”.
What’s more, she has 14 downhill victories and four super-G wins at a place that’s referred to as “Lake Lindsey” because of her dominance.
Two other U.S. Ski Team athletes finished in the points – Laurenne Ross, of Bend, Ore. was 12, and Mammoth Mountain’s Stacey Cook 17.
