FULL LIST: 2016 Grammy Award nominations announced
Notably bypassed in this year’s nominations was British folk-rock band Mumford & Sons, which received eight nominations and won a Grammy in 2013 for album of the year for “Babel”. Three of Weeknd’s nominations are for Earned It, a song featured on the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack.
The Grammy Awards are voted on by members of NARAS, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.
He was also named in the best pop solo performance category. Despite success with tours, albums and singles, Luke Bryan was also snubbed and has yet to earn a Grammy nomination. Record of the year incorporates the artist’s overall performance and delivery of the track including involvement from the producers and engineers. The hip-hop star picked up five nominations, including best rap song (“Energy”) and best rap album (“If Youre Reading This Its Too Late”). Kanye West makes an appearance in Rap Song with “All Day”, even though we are still left waiting for his album.
The odd timing of the Grammy schedule also means that this year’s monster-hit album – Adele’s freshly issued 25 – won’t be eligible for nomination until the awards’ 2017 edition. Voting for the second round, completed by mail and starting next week, ends on January 15, 2016. Among the singles hotly tipped to receive a nomination are Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ Uptown Funk, Ed Sheeran’s Thinking Out Loud and Swift’s Blank Space. Song of the Year, which honors songwriters, pits “Blank Space” against Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth’s “See You Again”, Little Big Town’s “Girl Crush”, Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” and Lamar’s “Alright”.
