Ava DuVernay Barbie Doll to Go on Sale Monday, Director Says
Following a successful social media campaign, the company announced the release of an Ava DuVernay doll, and it’s basically the Barbie we all need.
DuVernay took to Twitter on Sunday night to make the announcement, revealing proceeds from the sale of the doll will go to charity.
Duvernay is the first African-American woman to direct a movie nominated for a best picture Oscar. The original DuVernay Barbie, which was at the time one-of-a-kind, was auctioned off for charity in April. The Selma director is part of a line of “Sheroes” created by the toymaker based on real women.
The other Sheroes in Barbie’s lineup are actress and animal rights activist Emmy Rosum, Lucky magazine Editor-in-Chief Evan Chen, Broadway star Kristin Chenoweth, five-year-old fashion designer Sydney “Mayhem” Keiser and country artist Trisha Yearwood.
Ava DuVernay is officially a Barbie girl!
You can buy one of DuVernay’s dolls, starting sometime today (Dec. 7).
“Fans clamored for the dolls, though the special edition dolls weren’t available for sale then”.
Update: BarbieCollection.com reportedly sold out in seventeen minutes, but additional dolls may be available on Amazon. Barbie tweeted Sunday that it would tell fans Monday how they could order their very own dolls.
