Stars react to nominations for the 2016 Grammy Awards
As much as the RIAA continuously gets things embarrassingly wrong when awarding the yearly Grammy’s for the best in music, there have been a handful of bright spots over the past few years.
“Best Rock Album” nominees include Muse and Death Cab for Cutie, while Australian singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett was nominated for ‘Best New Artist’.
Taylor Swift and The Weeknd earned seven nominations apiece, with Drake landing five nods. This year, fans of Adele, Justin Bieber and One Direction, none of whose latest albums were nominated for a single 2016 Grammy (a full list of nominations was announced Monday morning on CBS), were outraged over what they thought were blatant oversights, even though that wasn’t the case. Yet the fact that D’Angelo’s Black Messiah record is missing from these categories makes little sense. (Mark Ronson feat. Bruno Mars), “Thinking Out Loud” (Ed Sheeran), “Can’t Feel My Face” (the Weeknd) and “Really Love” (D’Angelo and the Vanguard). Best country album nominees are Sam Hunt (“Montevallo”), Kacey Musgraves (“Pageant Material”) and Chris Stapleton (“Traveller”) along with Ashley Monroe (“The Blade”) and Little Big Town (“Pain Killer”).
In the rock category, Foo Fighters join Alabama Shakes in the Best Rock Performance category for their tune “Something From Nothing”.
Upon hearing the news that he had landed himself two nominations for Thinking Out Loud in the Song of the Year and Record of the Year categories, he admitted that he was shocked.
In the world of dance music, it was good to see the voting committee branch out a bit with nominations for both Flying Lotus and Galantis, but the fact that Giorgio Moroder failed to be recognized for his collaboration with Foxes, titled “Wildstar,” is nothing short of baffling.
In Best Americana Album, nominees included Jason Isbell’s Dave Cobb-produced Something More Than Free, along with the Mavericks’ Mono and projects by Brandi Carlile, Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell, and Punch Brothers. The GRAMMYs will air February 15 beginning at 8 PM.
