Odd, even number vehicles to ply in Delhi on alternate days
Kejriwal government is about to introduce a norm from January 1, whereby odd and even number plated cars would be allowed to ply on alternative days.
Plans submitted by the Environment Ministry and the Delhi Government were “not comprehensive”, the judges said, because they did not specify responsibilities and a timeline.
The Aam Aadmi Party leader made no mention about Sundays.
Summary: “Only time will tell how much serious he is with this odd and even”, Congress leader Ajay Maken told the media here.
Earlier measures apparently have not dented the increasing air pollution in Delhi, leading to major health issues.
The Delhi government had on Friday proposed the “even-odd” number formula for cars.
Maken also picked loopholes in city’s infrastructure including dearth of parking space and mass transportation system, which he said, doesn’t provide last mile connectivity. Kejriwal gave one more statement today that Delhi Government is just implementing for practise and wants to collect some facts for measuring the pollution control checks. “The easier way to curb pollution was to increase public transport for all routes, which would certainly encourage people to curb the usage of private vehicles”, said Rajeev Snehi, a sales manager with a reputed company who travels to Noida every day from south Delhi in his auto. Judges pooling cars would inspire millions to follow, Kejriwal tweeted.
According to Kohli, it will create problems for self- employed people, doctors and advocates who need private cars for fast movement at a short notice and also for women who prefer the privacy of their cars in odd hours.
In what the India Times has called a “bizarre solution” to air pollution, Delhi’s government decreed that vehicles would only be allowed to drive on alternate days depending on their number plate. “Thank u My Lords”.
He said the government would aim to start the scheme on January 1 and that the restrictions would initially be temporary.
The capital city also plans to shut down one of its oldest and least efficient thermal power plants. Moreover, studies also state that the national capital alone has more number cars than in Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai.
The decisions came a day after the Delhi High Court said that the national capital was like a gas chamber, and sought immediate action from the central and Delhi governments.
