Surprise: Eagles stun Patriots 35-28
“We gave up 21 points when the defense is on the field and you lose like 98 percent of those games”, Belichick said.
“Just really didn’t do anything well enough to really win”, Patriots Coach Bill Belichick said.
Eagles recovered from a poor start to inflict just a second defeat of the season on the AFC East leaders with a 35-28 victory and move within half a game of leaders Washington Redskins in their own conference.
“We’d love to have everybody healthy”.
“I think we knew the type of team we were, but this is real confidence builder”, tight end Zach Ertz said.
Of the 35 points scored, only 14 of them came from Kelly’s offense.
The Eagles are 1-0 when Lurie gives them a pep talk this year. A sturdy run defense was something the Patriots had been able to count on when they were ringing up win after win earlier this season, but their tackling hasn’t been consistently sound. Bradford completed 14 of 24 passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns.
“So it is unfortunate because those cost you a game and I have to do a better job”. “Of course you’re aware of that”, Kelly said.
The injuries that have decimated the Patriots simply may have punched one too many holes in the boat. Running back Darren Sproles finished with a game-high 15 carries for 66 yards, and four receptions for 34 yards and an 83-yard punt return for a touchdown.
The Philadelphia Eagles host the Buffalo Bills in one of the National Football League games on Sunday, December 13 start time at 1:00 PM ET, at Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia, Pa.
Philadelphia wide receiver Riley Cooper batted the ensuing onside kick out of bound and then caught a 14-yard pass from Sam Bradford on third-and-11, seemingly allowing the Eagles to run out the clock.
Placekicker Stephen Gostkowski tossed the ball to safety Nate Ebner, a former junior rugby union star, who drop kicked the ball about 20 yards. “They threw stuff at us that we didn’t”.
It seemed like the Eagles would go into halftime down a touchdown when New England lined up to punt in the final seconds.
Later, Ryan Allen’s punt was blocked by Chris Maragos.
And then – boom – just like that, Tom Brady threw an interception at the goal line that was returned 99 yards, the Eagles special teams made big play after big play and the biggest upset of the year* was at hand.
When the Patriots were forced to punt on their next possession, Sproles broke free for an 83-yard touchdown.
Danny Amendola (knee) was active and caught seven passes for 62 yards and a touchdown for the Patriots.
Brady went deep for Brandon LaFell on the very next play, and Byron Maxwell picked it off in the end zone.
The Eagles went on to score 35 unanswered points, and wide receiver Jordan Matthews provided a little context for that after the game.
Going back to the drop kick, it essentially was a gift to the Eagles, who were struggling on offense to that point in the game and trailed by 14.
With three minutes left in the game, Brady reignited Patriots hopes with a 25-yard pass to James White on fourth-and-12. Brady, who has thrown for 28 scoring passes against only four interceptions, is missing 138 catches and 16 TDs with the absences of Gronkowski and Edelman.
Brady said his turnovers cost them Sunday’s game.
He is now third on the NFL’s all-time touchdown list, trailing Peyton Manning (539) and Brett Favre (508).
Still, with the Eagles comfortably ahead and time running out, Brady did what he does: he found ways to make it work, and it nearly led to the greatest comeback win of his career. The Patriots had only lost consecutive post-Thanksgiving games twice before in the Brady era, most recently in 2009. Yes, he fumbled the ball away to give the New England Patriots one last chance on Sunday.
