Mariners-Red Sox discussing deal about starting pitching
Of note, Miley was the 43rd pick in the 2008 draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks, whose scouting director at the time was Mariners vice president of player personnel Tom Allison.
A competitive market for Miley could drive up what Boston can get for him in a trade, so a move makes sense from their side too.
According to Ken Davidoff of the New York Post, the Mariners have agreed on a deal to acquire Wade Miley from the Boston Red Sox.
Jon Heyman of CBS Sports was the first to report the full deal.
Miley’s only season in Boston was a tale of two periods for the left-hander.
For teams that need starting pitching and play in pitcher-friendly ballparks, like the aforementioned Seattle Mariners and Miami Marlins, Miley is a great fit if the Red Sox are willing to move him.
After posting a 8.62 ERA in four starts in April, he had a 3.49 ERA in six starts in May, a 3.30 ERA in five starts in June, a 5.30 ERA in six starts in July, a 4.31 ERA in six starts in August and a 3.97 ERA in five starts in September/October.
Smith – a 6-foot-6, 26-year-old right-hander, pitched in 70 Major League Baseball games last year, striking out 92 batters in 70 innings and converting 13 saves. With 11.8 strikeouts per nine innings, he gives manager John Farrell another arm at the back of a bullpen that includes closer Craig Kimbrel and holdover setup men Koji Uehara and Junichi Tazawa. Elias is a potentially useful 27-year-old starter, so the Red Sox seemingly did pretty well here.
